Free alternative to locum agencies could save the NHS billions
Does anyone really know how much the government is spending on Locum Recruitment Agencies? Well the future for the NHS could well be saved thanks to a social networking site that was launched in August 2010 that caters specifically for doctors and NHS trusts.
Doctors Pages is a clever website that has taken an idea like Facebook, and turned it in to a free networking tool that if utilised correctly could save the NHS over £1 Billion in the next 5 years.
So how can this site possibly save the country billions? Well here are a few facts that you might not know about the locum recruitment process.
Firstly you need to know that the NHS are contracting out their compliance procedure to third party companies, this means that businessmen that are more interested in profit as oppose to a patients wellbeing are currently responsible for ensuring that locum doctors have the necessary documentation that is required for a doctor to work within the NHS.
This is shocking, and needs to change. If the NHS brought this in house, then a site like Doctors Pages would serve as a free online recruitment database where NHS human resources departments could search for a Consultant Dermatologist for example, and have a list of locums that can be contacted free of charge through the site, just like an old school friend contacts someone on Facebook.
It’s incredibly clever stuff really, because part of the recruitment process through a locum agency involves paying a premium of 20-30% over a doctors wages just to pay for the compliance and a booking clerk to arrange a start date.
Let’s look at this a bit closer shall we. A locum consultant paediatrician earns about £200k a year, which more than double that of a substantive consultant paediatrician. It doesn’t take a genius to work out that 20-30% of £200k can be as much as £60,000 of public money wasted one 1 single doctor each year!
If the NHS contacted locums through Doctors Pages, in the example above they could offer the locum an extra £10,000 per year to sub contract at their trust, and still save the government £50k a year.
If the NHS did that with just 1000 locums it would save the country £50 million a year! Pretty staggering numbers if you consider a report on the BBC News website found here says that in Scotland alone they have over 8200 locums working in their hospitals each year, if they saved £50k a year on 8200 locums the saving would be £4.1bn
So if the numbers add up, and doctorspages is already live, why aren’t the NHS and all Locums that want to earn more money by cutting out the middle man not jumping on this bandwagon?
Well I can only assume that it all comes down to the compliance issue, but I’m quite certain that doing the compliance in house would cost considerably less then 50 million quid a year!
